First lady of the United States will participate in the reunification of migrant families

Washington, United States

U.S. First Lady Jill Biden will join her husband’s efforts to reunite migrant families separated by Donald Trump’s administration, the White House announced on Friday.

According to one of his campaign promises, Democratic President Joe Biden plans to announce the “launch of a task force to reunite families and children” on Tuesday, his spokesman, Jen Psaki, said at a news conference.

“His wife, Dr. Biden, will be personally committed and dedicated” on this team, led by Alejandro Mayorkas, who is expected to be confirmed by the Senate as Secretary of Homeland Security, he added.

Jill Biden, 69, has a Ph.D. in educational sciences and plans to continue teaching at a university near Washington, despite her husband’s coming to the White House.

In December, the first lady visited a migrant camp in Mexico, near the Texas border. “We are a hospitable nation, but that is not the message we are sending,” he then complained.

His tone contrasts with that of Melania Trump, the wife of the former president, who visited migrant children in 2018 wearing a jacket emblazoned with a print that read, “I really don’t care, do I?” (I don’t care about anything, do I?).

That year, the Trump administration implemented a “zero tolerance” policy on the border with Mexico, separating hundreds of families.

The children’s dramas sparked outrage even in Republican ranks, and the magnate ordered an end in June, at the same time as a judge ordered the reunification of the divided families.
