Fires, damage in Oakland protest against police brutality

OAKLAND, California (AP) – A protest that started peacefully in California ended with multiple fires, several cars damaged and countless windows shattered.

The protest against police brutality in Oakland started quietly Friday night, news outlets reported. Another march drew about 300 people with a number of windows burning and breaking.

A car dealer was damaged under the buildings. At least one car has been set on fire. Fire was also started outside a bank. Protesters passed the scene of a car accident.

Photos and videos posted online showed protesters holding signs and flags. Many sang Daunte Wright’s names, a 20-year-old who was shot and killed by an officer in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, and Adam Toledo, a 13-year-old shot by an officer in Chicago.

People in the crowd threw bottles and other items at officers during the march, Oakland police said in a statement. An officer was injured by a blow to the head. A member of the community was also attacked, police said.

The statement said protesters were dragging barriers on the road to block and delay responding agents.

Authorities declared an illegal meeting and ordered protesters to leave. Police said the protesters were peacefully dispersed. There were no arrests or citations.

Some companies had boarded up their storefronts earlier Friday in anticipation of the turmoil, news outlets said.
