A fast-moving fire destroyed several buildings in the much-loved Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, Connecticut on Friday.
Ashford firefighters said they responded to an alarm and several calls for smoke around 4:54 pm. When they arrived, they found a big fire in the main camp building, a large wooden structure with smaller interconnecting spaces inside.
It took about 90 minutes to control the fire, officials said. That main building was destroyed, as well as a smaller adjoining building, but the crews were able to save the camp’s dining hall and infirmary.

Ashford Deputy Chief Tom Borgman said it appears the building was empty at the time. No injuries were reported.
The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp was founded by actor Paul Newman. It is a camp that provides a true summer camp experience for critically ill children and offers programs for their families.
The camp has full on-site medical facilities to provide the children with all the care they would normally receive in a hospital setting.
“We are sad to share that there was a fire at The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp tonight,” CEO James Canton said in a statement. “We are extremely grateful that no one appears to have been injured, but can confirm that our Arts & Crafts, Woodshop, Cooking Zone and Camp Store buildings have all been destroyed. We appreciate the prompt response from the local fire department and Connecticut State Police Troop C very much. Although the cause of the fire is unknown at this time, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp is known to be a community committed to hope and healing. We will get through this in the way we always have and always will – as a family. “
Officials have not said whether the fire is considered suspicious. The Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Unit assists the Fire Chief in investigating the cause of the fire. Federal officials from ATF and the FBI also responded.
The investigation into the cause is ongoing. All witnesses to the fire are encouraged to contact the Connecticut State Police Troop C.
