FIFA 21 took top spot in the UK after missing the coveted Christmas No. 1 position last week.
Sales of EA’s football game were up 8% in terms of boxed physical copies only.
That means last week’s No. 1, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, drops to No. 2 after a week-over-week drop in sales of 21%. Given that the chart covers the Christmas Day period, it’s not entirely surprising that sales are falling for most games. Animal Crossing: New Horizons climbs to No. 3 despite a 20% drop in sales from week to week, while Mario Kart 8: Deluxe jumps to No. 4 despite an 8% dip. To round out the top five, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War drops from No. 2 to No. 5 after a 42% sales coupon.
December’s big new release, CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077, drops to number 8 after a 57% drop in sales. Remember, this is all based purely on physical game sales.
Other games that make up the top ten include Spider-Man Miles Morales for PS4 and PS5 (who is at number 6 after a 31% sales drop), Just Dance 2021 (one place up to number 7 despite a 28% sales slide ), Super Mario 3D All-Stars (up one to number 9 with a 25% drop in sales) and Minecraft on Switch (up one to ten after a 26% drop in sales).
Just Dance 2021 is a real breakthrough success for Ubisoft. It’s now just a week away from taking over Watch Dogs Legion as the publisher’s second-biggest game of the year (after Assassin’s Creed Valhalla), and seven-week sales are 35% higher than Just Dance 2020 in the same period.
Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe had its biggest year yet. The Nintendo Switch game has been steadily getting better and better every year since it was released, which was way back in 2017.
