Ferrari just released a few photos of the upcoming limited-edition track-focused 812, and, wow. It looks wild, with all kinds of new aerodynamic features such as a giant boomerang-shaped channel in the hood and louvers replacing the rear window. But the body isn’t the craziest thing about this new 812 – that would be the engine, which delivers 830 horsepower at 9500 rpm.
As a reminder, the 812 uses a naturally aspirated 6.5 liter V-12. We live in a world where large power ratings are common, but this kind of horsepower without forced induction or any hybrid assistance is extraordinary. And running a 6.5 liter engine well above 9000 rpm isn’t an easy task either. More details about the engine are coming, but Ferrari says it has been able to hit those numbers with new internal parts, a new variable valve timing system and a new exhaust.
Its 9500-rpm redline makes this 65-degree V-12 the highest-revving Ferrari road car engine of all time, and it will be one of the highest-revving production car engines out there. Only the upcoming Gordon Murray T.50 with its 12,100 rpm V-12, the Aston Martin Valkyrie with its 11,000 rpm V-12 and the Mercedes-AMG Project One with its 11,000 rpm V-6 will beat it. And those three are all ultra-limited, seven-digit hypercars.
Ferrari has not yet disclosed the name, price or expected production numbers for this new 812. These will be streamed live on May 5, along with more details about the car. This joins a pretty amazing array of crazy front-engined Ferrari V-12 specials, including the 599 GTO and the F12tDf.
It is said that all future V-12 Ferraris will have some type of hybrid assistance. We don’t know if this is the last all motorcycle, but if it is, what a way to go.
