San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. will be out of the lineup for at least 10 days, but will not require shoulder surgery, team general manager AJ Preller said Tuesday.
Preller said that Tatis will be placed on the disabled list so that he can rest and rehabilitate his shoulder and that he expects to return to play after a short while. ‘He’s not undergoing surgery. He doesn’t have a big swelling in his shoulder, ”said Preller.
“He has a slight tear in the labrum, which is consistent with a subluxation injury. Overall, today’s exam (Tuesday) was uneventful,” he added.
Tatis, 22, left Monday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park after fueling Anthony DeSclafani’s field to hit out and knocking himself to the ground in visible pain.
The Padres reported after the meeting that Tatis suffered from a shoulder subluxation, which is a partial dislocation of the joint.
“There’s a reason he is who he is,” said Jayce Tingler, the Padres manager. “We have no way to replace him. But we can get nine or ten players to increase production by small percentages, take good at-bats, make defensive plays and run the bases well,” he added.
Tatis, who before signing up for spring practice agreed to a 14-year extension of $ 340 million – the third largest contract in history at the time – had to leave a practice game due to a sore left shoulder after making a defensive play.

Tatis hit .317 with 22 homers to finish third in the 2019 NL Rookie of the Year race, his first Major League season, despite a low back injury that limited him to 84 games.
