Washington DC – The United States Department of Agriculture has approved the plan of the government of Puerto Rico to implement the program that will allow the distribution of $ 390.7 million to increase food aid to students affected by interruptions and changes in school hours during the coronavirus pandemic.
Washington House Commissioner Jenniffer González said today that the program, known by its abbreviation in English P-EBT and which will be administered by the Department of the Family in Puerto Rico, is designed to increase food security for students affected are due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Via the P-EBT, according to the office of Commissioner González, “a monthly monetary benefit equal to the closing days or hours that have taken place consecutively for a minimum of 5 days” can be delivered.
The program can benefit from nearly 327,000 students in the 2020-2021 school year.
González advocated in Congress for the island to be included in that program, which was originally approved to complement the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which operates in the states and some territories. In Puerto Rico, the federal nutrition plan is the Nutritional Assistance Program (PAN).
“The Pandemic EBT program has proved critical in ensuring that students have more food alternatives during the pandemic,” González said.
