The second 2021 software update for the Pixel 3, Pixel 3a, Pixel 4, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 has been released today. This February security patch contains the usual set of bug fixes.
21 issues have been fixed in the February security patch of 2021-02-01 and 23 for 2021-02-05. Vulnerabilities range from high to critical, with the most serious involving the media framework and a remote attacker potentially executing arbitrary code through a crafted file.
In the latest Android Security & Privacy Year in Review, Google notes that “no critical security vulnerabilities related to the Android platform were made public without a security update or limitation available for Android devices.” In addition, there was an 84% year-on-year increase in security patches during the fourth quarter of 2018 compared to the previous year.
The special bulletin for Google devices contains one security fixes and two functional updates.
After the December update, Pixel 4a 5G owners started to experience touch reliability issues. Edge taps, such as when using 3-button navigation, should be pressed several times before registering. A fix “further fine-tuning and improvements for touch experience” is included in the February security patch for the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5. Google also fixed an issue “preventing certain sensor detection at startup” on all current phones.
