“If you realistically project when we get enough data to say that elementary school children can be vaccinated, I would think that would be by the end of the year at the earliest and very likely in the first quarter of 2022,” said Fauci. .
“But for the high school kids, it looks like it sometime this fall,” he continued. “I’m not sure it will be exactly on the first day that the school opens, but it comes pretty close.”
Fauci also expressed support for the newly authorized vaccine produced by Johnson & Johnson, telling NBC he would get that vaccine if he found himself in a situation where it was the first thing he had access to.
“Well Chuck, first of all, you have at least three highly effective vaccines now,” Fauci said. “There is no doubt about that, especially the recent results [Johnson & Johnson] – if you consider the efficacy against serious diseases, more than 85 percent, and there are no hospitalizations or deaths in multiple countries, even countries with the variants. “
“If you go to a place and you have[Johnson & Johnson] , and that’s the one available right now, I’d take it. I would personally do the same, ”he said.
Fauci’s comments come as there is a debate nationwide about the percentage of teachers and possibly students who must receive a COVID-19 vaccine before schools can safely reopen for personal learning.
The Biden administration promised that schools would reopen within the president’s first 100 days, sparking concern among some teachers who were concerned that they would be sent back to work without access to a vaccine.
