Fauci predicts the J&J vaccine will be back on the market by Friday with restrictions or warnings

“I don’t want to get ahead of the CDC and the FDA and the advisory committee, but I imagine what we’re going to say is, it would come back and it would come back in some sort of warning or restriction,” he told Dana Bash of CNN on ‘State of the Union’.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will meet Friday to discuss recommendations for the J&J vaccine. The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration recommended discontinuing use of the J&J Covid-19 vaccine Tuesday for more than six reported cases of “a rare and serious type of blood clot,” reported in the US.

However, Fauci said it was wise to pause, saying “you want to make sure you have all the information you need”.

He compared the J&J clotting reports to that of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, which has been approved in much of Europe and has had similar reports of clotting. He noted that AstraZeneca’s vaccination reports “went beyond just women, there were some involving a few men. There was also a large age representation.”

Fauci told Bash that he hopes a decision was made on Friday and that a decision “somehow” is needed.

The ACIP committee originally held an emergency meeting last Wednesday, but postponed the vote on a recommendation until next Friday.
