Fauci’s comments come because some states have already begun to lift coronavirus restrictions amid a nationwide decline in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, as well as an increase in vaccinations. Some states, including Texas, have moved in recent days to significantly increase the pace of public life, removing all coronavirus restrictions, including mask mandates, and allowing full-capacity dining.
However, Biden and Fauci have warned that lifting the restrictions before enough people are vaccinated could reverse progress after the US made it out of what the president has called a “ dark winter. ”
According to the CDC’s website, more than 90 million people in the US have received vaccines.
In his first prime-time speech on Thursday night, Biden praised the government’s efforts to ramp up vaccine distribution, including a call to the country to make all adults eligible for a vaccine by May 1.
The president also referred to the CDC’s forthcoming guidelines for vaccinated Americans.
“In the coming weeks, we will provide further guidance on what you can and cannot do once you are fully vaccinated to reduce confusion, keep people safe and encourage more people to get vaccinated,” he said.
Biden said if people stay vigilant and get vaccinated, Americans can gather in small groups by July 4.
“That doesn’t mean big events get together with lots of people, but it does mean small groups can get together,” he continued.
