Father Michael Pfleger accused of child sexual abuse 40 years ago, steps from St. Sabina ministry: Archdiocese

CHICAGO (WLS) – Cardinal Blase Cupich in Chicago sent a letter to St. Sabina Parish on Tuesday informing them that Father Michael Pfleger will leave his ministry after being charged with sexually assaulting a child.

In the letter, Cupich said the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office for Child Abuse Investigations and Review received an allegation of sexually assaulting a child that took place more than 40 years ago.

Cupich said Pfleger agreed to set aside his ministry and will live outside the parish during the investigation. Father Thulani Magwaza will serve temporarily as clerk of St. Sabina parish, attending church and school.

Cupich said the allegation has been proven untrue or false, so there should be no presumption of guilt or innocence.

St. Sabina responded in a statement saying in part, “We, the cabinet of the St Sabina Faith Community, believe these allegations are unfounded and we boldly support the integrity, passion, work and ministry of our Sr. Pastor. ., Rev. Michael Pfleger … We understand that there is a trial and protocol from the Archdiocese of Chicago and we will cooperate fully. However, we believe that our Sr. Pastor will be fully acquitted of all charges as he endured this trial Victims of injustice and will continue to improve his work and life, [sic] he is committed to serving others. “

Pfleger, 71, became a priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1975 and pastor of St. Sabina in 1981. For decades he has been one of the city’s most outspoken and politically active faith leaders. Last Thursday he led an anti-violence march.

The allegation was also reported to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and Cook County Attorney, as the policy is, Cupich’s letter said.

“It is crucial to know that nothing is more important than the well-being of the children entrusted to our care,” the letter concluded in part.

Officials from the Archdiocese of Chicago said they were aware of the charges Monday afternoon. They are not aware of any lawsuit related to the allegations. They refused to go beyond the letter.

No further comment from the Archdiocese has been made or will be given Tuesday. Father Pfleger did not respond to requests for comment from ABC7 Eyewitness News.
