The surprise cameo appearance on the most recent episode of Falcon and Winter Soldier has seen that character’s comedy debut soar in price.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Episode 5, “Truth”, now streaming on Disney +.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s shocking debut as La Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine in the final episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier led to a price hike in the Contessa’s first comic.
This spike has followed a steady pattern over the past few months, with a character prominently featured in a trailer (like Owen Wilson’s Mobius in the Loki trailer) leads to a spike in that character’s first appearance on the secondary market or when a major storyline in a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series hints at a notable comic book moment (such as the White Vision’s introduction in WandaVision) that the comic book that inspired the moment also sees a jump in sales of previous songs. Heck, we’re seeing that effect now even occur on non-Marvel comic series (like Jupiter’s Legacy # 1 spiking after the Jupiter’s legacy trailer has been released).

The price increase of 1967 Strange stories # 159, with the Contessa’s debut, is a bit more obvious than other copies, as it is much older than the more modern Marvel comics that have increased recently (as many of the modern MCU series are Disney + inspired appear to be). late eighties / early nineties comic books, mixed with even more recent storylines).
The reason that matters is that older comic books are more likely to be rated by a third-party comic book sorter like Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), and CGC grades can give you comparable comics. In other words, let’s say a comic book that rarely gets high spikes in the old issue price, it is sometimes difficult to tell from the sale prices exactly what is going on with the appraisal, as every song that is sold is in a very different state.
In this case we can make copies of it Strange stories # 159 who have the same CGC class and compare them and the difference is big.
On April 7, a 9.6 copy of the song (featuring a Jim Steranko written and signed Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD story that memorablely introduced the Contessa) …
sold for $ 565.
After the Contessa appeared on Falcon and Winter Soldier, a 9.6 sold for $ 1,984.50. A 7.5 copy cost $ 700.
The influence of the MCU continues to cast a broad shadow over the underlying issue prices.
Created by Malcolm Spellman and directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Erin Kellyman, Adepero Oduye, Florence Kasumba and Daniel Brühl. New episodes debut Fridays on Disney +.
