Facebook plans smartwatch with focus on messages, health – the information

Facebook is building a smartwatch it hopes to sell next year, according to people with direct knowledge of the device. According to four of those people, carriers can send messages using Facebook’s services and also provide health and fitness features.

Facebook’s planned foray into smartwatches would take the company further toward CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s goal of mastering the next computing platforms beyond smartphones. In recent years, the social network has expanded to include consumer hardware sales, with the introduction of Oculus virtual reality headsets and the Portal range of home video calling devices. But it hasn’t yet hit the smartwatch market popular with companies like Apple, Huawei and Fitbit, which is now owned by Google.
