WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Microsoft has been hacked as part of the suspected Russian campaign that hit multiple US government agencies by taking advantage of SolarWinds Corp’s widespread use of software, according to people familiar with the case.

As with SolarWinds network management software, Microsoft’s own products were then used to further the attacks on others, the people said.

It was not immediately clear how many Microsoft users were affected by the contaminated products. The Department of Homeland Security, which said earlier Thursday that the hackers were using multiple access methods, is continuing its investigation.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
