A former New York Giants veteran quarterback now has a coaching job with the Philadelphia Eagles.
No, it’s not Eli Manning.
Two days after quarterback Alex Tanney, 33, retired from the Giants, he returned to the NFL as an offensive quality control coach for the Eagles.
Although Tanney only played two games in the NFL, he had a nine-year career in the league, often serving as a coach-like mentoring role for younger players. He was a rookie with the Chiefs in 2012 when new Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was the receiver coach.
Tanney’s signature moment on the field was when he replaced Manning in the fourth quarter of a win on December 15, 2019, Manning’s last start and performance in his 16-year career with Big Blue.
Tanney will work directly under new offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who led the attack on the Los Angeles Chargers last season. Steichen also teamed up with Sirianni when the two were on the Chargers’ coaching staff a few years ago. Sirianni was the Colts ‘offensive coordinator for the past three seasons before becoming the Eagles’ head coach.
It remains unknown whether Jaylen Hurts or Carson Wentz will be Sirianni’s starting quarterback. The Eagles have reportedly worked hard to trade Wentz but have not received any offers to their liking.
