Everything we know about the recent drunk driving incidents involving firefighters in Detroit

DETROIT – There have been two separate drink-driving incidents recently involving firefighters in Detroit.

The first incident occurred on Feb. 21 when the Squad 6 operator, a heavy duty rescue motorcycle, crashed into a parked car on the east side of Detroit while responding to a phone call about a woman who was ill. The firefighter was screened for alcohol, and the department said he tested across the legal limit.

Sources said that firefighter and his crew were at a retirement and promotion party at Engine House 50 when the call came in. Sources said alcohol was consumed at that party.

The second recent incident took place on Monday morning. Acting Chief 5 did not respond to calls about a house fire on the west side of Detroit.

The experienced firefighter was later found in a department SUV dangling over the Lodge Freeway. He was taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving.

“I take this very seriously. It will not be tolerated, ”said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Duggan said the department and himself should have seen mezing coming and strengthened the employee support program.

The fire department said they welcome help.

On February 21, a woman’s car was hit by a Detroit fire truck.

The woman’s sister was sick in a house on the east side of town, and when Detroit Fire Department Squad Six arrived on the scene, a 26-year-old firefighter behind the wheel of a $ 500,000 rescue vehicle hit her car.

The Detroit Fire Department is investigating what they call a diner, but sources are calling it a big party at Engine 50, on Detroit’s east side.

Sources told the Local 4 Defenders that there was drinking, a lot of drinking and that members of Squad Six were on duty and the fire engine drove to the party.

The SUV of a Detroit fire chief was found dangling above the Lodge Freeway in Milwaukee and Baltimore early Monday morning.

The SUV was Chief 5 of the Detroit Fire Department. On Monday, a fire chief was taken into custody. Sources said the captain was driving under the influence.

The incident started at 2 a.m. on Monday morning when there was a call about a fire on the west side of Detroit near Majestic and Livernois.

The captain would be present at the call, he would serve as the head coach of the fire service operation. Repeated calls were made on the radio, but the captain was unreachable, sources said.

Sources told Local 4 that the captain was suspended in 2016 after an incident involving codeine that was not prescribed to him.
