Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, the mobile compilation that contains all Final Fantasy VII expanded universe stories together in one place, will include loot boxes, creative director Tetsuya Nomura confirmed yesterday in a new interview with Famitsu

While the smartphone game itself will be free, monetization mechanics will be built around collecting special items and cosmetics. “The monetization element is basically loot boxes of random weapons,” Nomura told Famitsu, based on a translation by Square Enix PR. “Some of the special weapons also come as a set with new costumes that weren’t in the original games, giving you a new way to enjoy the story you haven’t seen before.”

Microtransactions in its mobile games are nothing new to Square Enix. Previous games such as Mobius Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy Brave Exvius they have also had. Some of the company’s early forays into free-to-play mobile games were disastrous. To remember Final Fantasy: All the BravestIt’s also gone the reverse route every now and then, with a free-to-play game like Final Fantasy Legends: Crystal of Space-Time, getting rid of its microtransaction economy and relaunching it with a premium price tag like Final Fantasy Dimensions II

Long story short: it remains to be seen how tough Ever crisis’ microtransactions eventually become. The game is made up of chapters. Nomura says Final Fantasy VIIFor example, the story will consist of 10, with the Midgar escape beginning in Chapter Three. They will all be free and will be added over time. Is there a world where I ultimately prefer to pay $ 2 for each new chapter rather than $ 2 for a chance to unlock a beautifully redesigned Buster Sword for Cloud? Possibly. Loot box mechanics tend to feel gross and explodeoptional no matter how generously they are implemented.

Here are some more interesting snippets about what is cooking in it Final Fantasy VII world from the interview:

  • Fight royale game Final Fantasy VII: First Soldier will have a class system that players can switch between.
  • One of the chapters in Ever crisis will deliver the backstory to First soldier, takes place 30 years before the events of Final Fantasy VII and showing much younger versions of certain main characters.
  • Final Fantasy VII: Remake‘s Yuffie DLC will include new Materia, subpoenas, and a combo system in battle with her NPC companion Sonon.
  • Final Fantasy VII: Remake Intergrade There will be fewer gameplay recording restrictions on the PS5, so the internet can finally start sharing some of its wilder spoiler moments.

I was very excited when Square announced Enix Ever Crisis because on the one hand was the company double (triple, quadruple?) immersion when remade Final Fantasy VII, it will also be the first time most people have access to games a version of the game’s sprawling spin-off cannonBut will like games Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus ever get their own good reissues?

“We’ve also seen people wanting to be able to play the different series titles on current console hardware, so the design concept behind it Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is not intended as a substitute for it, but as an easy and informal way to touch these games, ”said Nomura in yesterday’s interview. Hmmm …
