Error reported in the distribution of vaccines in Boone County

BOONE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The West Virginia National Guard has released a statement regarding an error reported in the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in Boone County.

According to the WVNG, the error resulted in 42 people getting the Regeneron Antibody product instead of the Moderna Vaccine.

Officials say those people received the antibody product at a vaccination clinic hosted by Boone County health department staff.

The WVNG says medical experts from the Joint Interagency Task Force do not believe there is any risk of harm to these 42 individuals.

In West Virginia, no other people were given the antibody in place of the vaccine.

None of the other vaccine shipments before yesterday or in the future will be affected by this.

According to the National Guard, vaccine-related protocols have been revised and strengthened.

Officials say 7,855 Western Virginians were vaccinated into the state on Wednesday.

“The moment we were made aware of what had happened, we immediately acted to correct it, and we immediately revised and strengthened our protocols to improve our distribution process to prevent this from happening again,” said Major General James Hoyer, Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard. “I remain incredibly proud of everything our team has achieved. Our main goal was to save lives, and as we continue to accelerate the distribution of the vaccine across the state, we continue to save more and more lives every day. “

“The product administered is antibodies that fight COVID-19,” said Dr. Clay Marsh, the state’s COVID-19 Tsar. In fact, this product was the same that was administered to President Trump when he became infected. Although this injection is not harmful, it has been substituted for the vaccine. But this incident represents a significant opportunity for our leadership team to review and improve the safety and vaccination process for each West Virginia. “
