A source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that the Sox and Hernández have agreed on a two-year $ 14 million deal. The club has not announced the signing.
Hernández, who won a World Series in 2020 with the Dodgers, will help fill the void the Red Sox have at second base.
The Red Sox, likely Jackie Bradley Jr. losses in free trade and have left Andrew Benintendi dangling in trade talks can also use Hernández in the outfield.
While Hernández’s defensive versatility is a definite advantage – as the Red Sox learned firsthand with Holt from 2014/19 – he can also hit, especially against leftists. In 893 record appearances against leftists, Hernández has a .820 OPS.
Hernández hit a career-high 21 homers for the Dodgers in ’18, and came back with 17 more in ’19.
In 690 career games – all but 42 with the Dodgers – Hernández has a slash of .240 / .313 / .425 with 71 homers and 227 RBI’s.
Defensively, Hernández split his career in the following way: 11 at first base, 132 at second base, 56 at short stop, 14 at third base, 60 at left, 128 at center and 35 at right.
While the Red Sox haven’t made any splashy moves this winter, chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has added depth to his position squad with Hunter Renfroe and Hernández, as well as to the pitching staff with right-wing Matt Andriese and left-wing Martín Pérez
