Enjoy the natural glory of a deer encountering a garage door

With the arrival of spring, the world is starting to wake up again. Flowers bloom, birds chirp and deer tear into driveways to bang their heads against garage doors.

This last, miraculous demonstration of the season’s overall sense of optimism and joy was captured on video by YouTube channel ssnapier through images so breathtaking that we can almost hear David Attenborough’s story as it plays. For a few seconds we just see a driveway and some movement in the sun-drenched stretch of road at the edge of the camera image. Then a deer enters a barrelin sight of an apparent mission to throw himself into the garage door as hard as possible. The natural majesty of the herd animal comes into its own when it hits the door with a distorted slap just before a few more deer follow, skidding along the sidewalk, flapping over each other and then back to who-knows- true, their purpose is completed.

There is a moment of silence before a man’s voice is heard from inside the house yelling at a dog to calm down and then yelling, with perfect comedic timing, “What the fuck?”

It is clear that he is overwhelmed by the beauty of what he has just been lucky enough to witness: a ballet choreographed by nature and performed with mysterious grace by the beautiful children of planet Earth.

Some people in the video’s comments suggest that the deer couldn’t see where they were going because the sun was too bright and the garage door was painted a light color. This seems very possible, but we also know that it is just as important to take the unpredictable artistry of the natural world on its own terms as it is to try to explain it with a scientific foundation. What weight does a description of a rainbow have besides seeing a rainbow with your own eyes? Does knowing the evolutionary reasons for a cardinal’s bright red feathers make the bird look even more beautiful? No. And the same is true of this other remarkable display of an animal’s spectacular, moving drive to collide with a stationary object at full speed.
