After performing at the audio drop-in service Clubhouse, where he briefly discussed some Neuralink projects involving monkeys playing games, Elon Musk has stated that the brain computer interface booting wants to speed up its pace to make human trials as fast as possible . Provided all goes well, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX noted that human trials for Neuralink’s technology could begin as early as this year.
Musk’s update came in response to a tweet from Twitter user Hamoon Kamai, who stated that he is available for clinical studies at Neuralink. Kamai noted that he was in a car accident 20 years ago, which has left him paralyzed in the shoulders ever since. In his response, Musk stated that starting up the brain computer interface is a priority for safety and is in close communication with the FDA.
“Neuralink works super hard to ensure implant safety and is in close contact with the FDA. If things go well, we can run the first human trials later this year, ”Musk wrote.
Elon Musk has mentioned Neuralink several times during his recent field trips on Twitter. Recently, the CEO posted about job openings at the company, emphasizing that Neuralink’s goals in the future are “ important at a species level. ” Musk later added that those interested in working for Neuralink, particularly those with skills and experience in advanced wearables, phones, or robots, can work at the company’s Bay Area or Austin locations.
Neuralink’s brain implant device has undergone some refinements over the years. During its August 2020 presentation, Elon Musk unveiled the design for Link V0.9, which is noticeably slimmer than the device the company presented during its summer 2019 presentation. The company’s implant robot, which would perform the installation of the Neuralink device, also showed some improvements over the previous iteration.
While Neuralink’s long-term goal may be to achieve some degree of symbiosis with artificial intelligence, the company’s short-term goals are much more grounded. For example, Musk has noted that Neuralink’s technology can help cure neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and spinal cord injuries, giving those suffering from these conditions a second chance to live a full life.
