Elon Musk may know a thing or two about missiles and electronic vehicles, but during an interview with podcaster Joe Rogan this week, he revealed something of a blind spot when it comes to cannabis, saying he thinks CBD is ‘fake’.
That’s not to say he believes the non-intoxicating cannabinoid doesn’t really exist. The tech entrepreneur previously indicated that he thinks it is overhyped and ‘does nothing’. Rogan, in turn, had a lot to say about the benefits of cannabidiol.
The exchange began with Musk and Rogan reflecting on an earlier podcast show in 2018 where the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla chugged on a marijuana blunt (which he later claimed never actually inhaled), leading to an investigation by NASA about the ‘workplace safety’ of his aviation company. And ‘adhere to a drug-free environment’.
Rogan, who moved his podcast headquarters from California to Texas last year, noted that his new home state has not yet legalized marijuana, but “CBD is legal here.”
“CBD doesn’t do anything. Does it? “Musk said.” I think that’s fake. “
Listen to Musk and Rogan discuss CBD below, starting around 50:00:
Rogan promptly gave Musk a crash course in the numerous therapeutic benefits of CBD that have been identified in an ever-growing body of scientific literature.

JR: Well, no – no, it certainly does something against inflammation.
IN: It does?
JR: Yeah right.
IN: Well, How Much CBD Do You Need to Have Before Noticing?
JR: Physical?
IN: Yes.
JR: Yes, you don’t need much physically. Physically, CBD works great for people with arthritis and people with muscle pain and things like that. Yes, no, CBD certainly works for that, but in terms of psychoactive effects, not much. It relieves fear of people.
IN: Okay.
JR: It helps people sleep, especially when combined with things like melatonin, you know, things along those lines. But it doesn’t get you high. People do mix CBD with THC for muscle creams, and that won’t get you high, but it increases effectiveness.
IN: Okay.
JR: Yes, there are some creams that are really good that such people contain THC and CBD.
IN: Okay, so you’ve got something like sunscreen or something and then, I mean, why don’t you just throw it in there?
JR: Why not? Well it’s great for pain.
IN: You smell like weed all day long.
JR: However, it doesn’t smell like weed.
IN: Not?
JR: No, no – some of it is. That’s the problem with everything that isn’t regulated, right? The way hippies make it, that’s always the problem.
IN: Quality control.
JR: Yes, no quality control. That’s the problem with edibles. They’re made by a bunch of crazy people, who cook them and some, you know, Chula Vista apartments, you really don’t know what’s in them.
Musk may not be fully aware of CBD, but he likes to play in marijuana culture from time to time.
For example, when Telsa’s stock hit $ 420, he responded on Twitter with howling laughing emojis, saying, “Whoa … the stock is so high lol.”
420 is well known among cannabis enthusiasts, of course, as it represents the unofficial cannabis holiday, 4/20. And that wasn’t Musk’s first time in it either.
The billionaire tech entrepreneur found herself in hot water with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2018 after saying he was considering taking Tesla privately at a $ 420 stock price – an announcement that SEC described as “ false and misleading ” and that was without required notice to regulators.
Rogan, for his part, is a proud aficionado of cannabis and psychedelics, and once shared, for example, a story of how he interacted with Dave Chappelle while the comedian ate psilocybin mushrooms donated by a stranger.
Texas would study psilocybin and MDMA to treat PTSD and depression under a new law
