Elon Musk is serious about making the upcoming Tesla Roadster “float” with rocket technology in new comments about the electric supercar.
At the initial unveiling of the vehicle, Tesla claimed a list of impressive specifications for its new Roadster, including 0-100 km / h in 1.9 sec, a range of 620 miles and more.
The CEO also teased those specs as the “ base specs, ” and other versions should have even crazier performance.
With the recent launch of the Model S Plaid and Plaid +, Tesla has already surpassed the performance first announced in the Roadster, which is a more expensive vehicle.
Musk previously said Tesla will offer a “SpaceX package” that will include cold air thrusters to give the Roadster even better performance.
In a new interview with Joe Rogan, the CEO said Tesla really plans to incorporate this technology and float the vehicle:
We’re going to throw some rocket technology into that car. I want it to float. We need to figure out how to make it float without killing people.
Musk previously discussed that possibility, and he even spoke of a possible demonstration:
In the interview, the CEO began to discuss potential limitations for leveling the electric supercar ‘safely’:
I thought maybe we could make it float, but not too high. You let it float like a meter above the ground or something. Something where when you plummet you blow up the suspension, but you don’t die. Maybe 6 feet. You probably just put a height limit on it.
When asked if you can move while floating, Musk confirmed that you:
You would go pretty fast, but you will have time limits. It is a super high air bottle. The standard version has a back row with two small seats, like child seats in a Porsche or something, or if you get the SpaceX option package, that’s where those two seats are a high-pressure carbon-wrapped pressure vessel, something at about 10,000 psi. and a lot of thrusters.
The CEO reiterated the recent announcement that they will be finalizing engineering of the new Tesla Roadster this year for production next year.
