Ellen DeGeneres is getting heat online for admitting to driving her wife, Portia de Rossi, to hospital in March after drinking three ‘weed drinks’ and taking over-the-counter sleeping pills.
DeGeneres admitted that what she did on Tuesday was “probably not safe” for Jimmy Kimmel on an episode of his marijuana-themed show.
DeGeneres explained that she found the Rossi on the bathroom floor of their home, visibly in pain, but only after the daytime talk show host drank three Cann’s drinks and the sleeping aid melatonin. She then drove the Rossi to hospital for an emergency appendectomy.
“Chelsea Handler told me about these weed drinks, they are called Cann, and they have CBD or [THC] – I don’t know what’s right, ”explained DeGeneres, 63.
“I drank one and didn’t feel anything, so I drank three, and then took two melatonin sleeping pills,” she continued.
‘And I’m in bed, and I realize it [Portia’s] not in bed, ”DeGeneres said. She groans. I get out of bed and she’s on all fours on the floor and I said, “You’re not okay.” She says, “I’m fine.” I said, ‘No, unless you’re playing Twister alone, you’re not okay.’ So I rushed her to the emergency room. “
Kimmel, 53, asked DeGeneres, “Did you ride her alone?”
“Yes,” she replied. “I mean, I fell for it, just like my adrenaline, because I just had to rush her there. It probably isn’t safe.
“I shouldn’t say anything about this,” added DeGeneres.
Some social media users denounced DeGeneres’ anecdote as an example of her privilege, with one writing, ‘She could have killed someone. I am so sick of her right to one… ”said the Daily Mail.
According to the company that produces Cann, Vana, their line of marijuana-infused drinks potentially ranges from a blend of 2 milligrams of THC combined with 4 milligrams of CBD to 5 milligrams of THC alone. (For reference, the Marijuana Policy Project recommends a first-time edible user to start with a 5-milligram dose.)
De Rossi, 48, was released the day after her procedure. At the time, DeGeneres said she was in “a lot of pain” after surgery, but “felt much better now.”
