Elizam Escobar’s wake is in Old San Juan

Artist and former political prisoner Elizam Escobar will be veiled this Thursday between 4pm and 7pm at Casa Contrafuertes, Calle San Sebastián in Old San Juan.

Escobar died on January 15, aged 71, after several years of battling cancer.

As stated in a press release, “in accordance with a permit granted for the celebration of the vigil, it is necessary to follow all protocols for adherence to strict COVID-19 prevention measures.”

Among the recognitions Escobar received are an honorary master’s degree from the School of Plastic Arts, La Campechada’s 2016 dedication, the International Association of Art Critics’ award in 2013 for best retrospective exhibition, and the Pen Club’s award in 1999 for Best Essay Anthology – a book written and published in prison.
