According to the United Nations on Saturday, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and El Salvador will be the first countries to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for free and under the COVAX mechanism.

The organization’s information center in Bolivia has specified through a statement that the three South American countries and the Central American had been selected to participate in the first round of distribution under the aforementioned mechanism.

The letter specified that Bolivia will receive “nearly one million vaccines as donations, 92,430 doses of Pfizer and 900,000 doses of AstraZeneca,” but it does not state how many doses were initially assigned to the other three countries.

“This will be the first batch the country will receive until the number of doses is completed to cover 20% of the Bolivian population,” the entity said in celebration of the good news for Bolivians.

As he explains, the COVAX Mechanism is a global alliance for the acquisition and equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, led by the Coalition for Innovation in Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI), Gavi and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) / World Health Organization. .

The aforementioned alliance works with vaccine manufacturers, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Bank and civil society organizations, among others.

According to what was reported by the United Nations Information Center in Bolivia, on January 6, the COVAX mechanism offered countries the opportunity to express their interest in accessing a limited first volume of an ultra cold chain vaccine from Pfizer / BioNTech and Bolivia belonged to the first to submit their proposal along with 72 other proponents.

Bolivia will gain extensive technical and financial collaboration through COVAX for its Expanded Immunization Program (EPI), to strengthen the cold chain needed for vaccine management; they will train their health personnel in its use and maintenance; as well as information, communication and social mobilization actions to promote the importance of the vaccine.

Bolivian President Luis Arce Catacora said in a message that he addressed the public that the first batch of vaccines against COVID-19 will be received through the COVAX mechanism in February.
