Duque calls Maduro a “murderer” for “persecuting, torturing, murdering and imprisoning” opponents

Colombian President Iván Duque has described his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolás Maduro as a “murderer” and has justified his claim with evidence he believes the UN and the International Criminal Court (ICC) already have in their possession.

“The persecution, torture, murder and imprisonment of civilians deserves the description of a murderer,” Duque said in an interview on Colombian Channel 1. So it is believed that it is not a “reckless” claim, but that it is justified.

In the interview, Duque also defended the proposal that aims to tax the so-called megapensions according to the project to be discussed in the Colombian congress.

“Retirees who receive more than ten million benefits must contribute to the protection program for the most vulnerable,” explains Duque. “Pensions less than three times the minimum wage should not be taxed,” he added.

Likewise, Duque felt that it would not be helpful “at this point” to abolish the 0.4 percent tax on financial transactions, although the possibility of a gradual withdrawal should be discussed in the future.
