Dumfries, Senna’s 1986 teammate and Le Mans winner, dies at the age of 62

The British driver also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans

The British Johnny Dumfries, who was teammates of Brazilian Ayrton Senna in the Lotus team in 1986 and that in 1988 he won the 24 hours of Le Mans, he died at the age of 62, reports the official website of the World Cup on Monday formula 1

Dumfries, 7th Marquess of Bute and whose real name was John Colum Crichton-Stuart, was best known as Ayrton Senna’s teammate at Lotus in the 1986 season. The Brazilian reportedly chose him over the prospect of a stronger teammate like Derek Warwick.

His best result was fifth place at the Hungarian Grand Prix that year. He also took sixth place in Australia.

Two years after his only F1 season, Dumfries built his reputation by taking an outright victory at the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hours, alongside Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace at the wheel of a Jaguar XJR-9LM.

In a statement confirming his passing after a short illness, the Dumfries family said, “The indomitable spirit and energy that Johnny brought into his life will be sorely missed, as will the immense warmth and love with which he embraced his family.”
