Drill sergeant at Joint Base San Antonio dies of multiple gunshot wounds, officials say

SAN ANTONIO – According to the JBSA, a sergeant assigned to the US Army Medical Center of Excellence at San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Joint Base has died of multiple gunshot wounds.

According to the JBSA, Sergeant Jessica Mitchell, a 68th dental specialist, was pronounced dead at University Hospital San Antonio on Friday around 3 a.m.

The unit was informed by hospital staff that Mitchell, who was on vacation leave at the time, was the victim of multiple gunshot wounds. It is unclear what happened that led to her death.

San Antonio Police and Army Investigators are investigating the situation.

Mitchell had been assigned to MEDCoE since August 2019. Before that, she worked in a JBSA dental clinic since October 2017.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Sergeant Jessica Mitchell. Our sincere condolences go out to her family and friends. We are focused on supporting Drill Sergeant Mitchell’s family and her soldiers in this extremely difficult time, ”said Major General Dennis LeMaster, MEDCoE’s commander.
