Douglas County Update

The Douglas County Health Department confirmed on Saturday that nine cases of the California variant (B.1.429) have been found. Just a day after the state announced its first case of the B.1.1.7 COVID-19 variant in the UK, the DHHS also confirmed that a further four cases were found by the Nebraska Public Health Lab.

Two cases were identified in Public Health Solutions, one in Lancaster-Lincoln and one in East Central. That’s a total of 13 cases of the California variant.

Officials say the California variety spreads more easily, but available vaccines are effective against it.

The Lincoln-Lancaster County health department on Saturday confirmed its first case of the California COVID-19 variant, dubbed B.1.429. The case was identified as a man in his sixties.

Officials say the variant was identified through special testing at the Nebraska Public Health Lab.

The health department also reported 65 more cases, bringing the community total to 28,151. The total number of deaths remains at 221.
