NEW YORK (AP) – Doja Cat went for neon feathers and a moto-inspired look that was zipped all the way down and Cynthia Erivo dazzles in a sparkly silver dress with gold Louis Vuitton accents at the Grammys as music’s big Sunday luxury fashion offered moment for the stars.
Dressed in Roberto Cavalli, Doja’s revealing look included zippers with cat claws on each arm and a feathered skirt.
“I want to be the cat lady, so let me be,” she said.
Erivo’s dress had a low-cut front with a gold bib at the top and a gold belt, while DaBaby brightened up a drastically scaled-down red carpet in a bright mustard and green floral suit from Dolce & Gabbana.
Dua Lipa also shone in a pink Versace sequined dress with a butterfly motif. The body-skimming dress had cut-outs at the hips and a sexy high slit.
“It was really cool to work together,” she said.
Billie Eilish paired her long nails with a loose pink and black trouser look, her hat and face mask also a match.
DaBaby, his mother Linda, next to him in red, topped his suit with a wide-brimmed green hat and red underneath. He attended in person, but previously created an Instagram red carpet moment with his daughter, as no kids were allowed on the Los Angeles show.
Joanie Leeds, winner of the best children’s music album, did something similar from a distance from home in New York.
“I’ve actually made a step and repeat and a red carpet,” she told reporters during a virtual press conference for the show. “We all walked the red carpet and we had a photographer here and we got some really good pictures.”
Leeds wore a multi-colored sequin dress by Nicole Miller, and she lowered her silver heels to reveal to the camera.
“Just because we’re virtual this year I wouldn’t be wearing my hoodie sweater,” said Leeds, a first-time Grammy winner.
Due to pandemic precautions, the “red carpet” was not the usual mass of cameras and TV crews. A select number of outlets were allowed on site to conduct live interviews – at a safe distance from each other.
The evening’s host, Trevor Noah, showed up for the austere carpet in a classic black Gucci tux, while nominee Debi Nova went tall – and pink – in a mini dress with an enormous train and tropical details, by Georges Chakra. Phoebe Bridgers wore a black dress adorned with a beaded human skeleton from Thom Browne, and Megan Thee Stallion wore a strapless bright orange princess look with a high side split and a huge bow and train at the back from Dolce & Gabbana. Her Chopard choker completed the look.
‘I wanted to pop. I wanted to look like a Grammy, ”Megan said.
Nandi Howard, associate fashion editor at Essence, praised Megan and DaBaby’s style moments.
“I’m looking forward to seeing D&G work more with hip-hop artists. Megan looked so regal in her orange dress, and tonight she wore her outfit effortlessly. I hope to see her in couture more often. She wears it really well, ”she said.
Howard also offered compliments to Lizzo, who dazzled in a pink mermaid look to hand out an award and previously wore a short strapless dress with ruffles of Balmain sea foam. She was dripping in Bulgari jewelry.
“We normally see avant-garde dresses at the Grammys, but leave it to Lizzo to change them in the best way possible,” Howard said.
Jacob Collier said he went for comfort in a floral Stella McCartney turtleneck.
“I’ve never asked about clothes before,” he said. “I feel like a rock star.”
In Dundas, HER rocked a burgundy, mid-height coat with matching wide-leg pants.
Noah Cyrus spoke to reporters in a cream-colored dress with a huge cape-like effect that encircled her face. It was a Schiaparelli, a gloomy Cyrus and a first-time Grammy nominee. She said she was honored to be the first to wear it. Cyrus mourns her grandmother’s recent death.
“I wish my grandmother could have seen this,” she said of her nomination.
