The artist was described as a lonely figure and remained anonymous for some time, hiding her identity in interviews by masking her voice or covering parts of herself. Before revealing that she was a trans woman, some commentators accused Sophie of “feminine appropriation,” assuming she was a man using a female stage name.

In a 2013 email interview from Pitchfork, when asked about her choice of ‘Sophie’ as the stage name, she replied, “It tastes good and it’s like a moisturizer.” During a Boiler Room show, drag artist Ben Woozy was recruited to impersonate a DJ set, while Sophie pretended to be a bodyguard.

In October 2017, Sophie released the music video for “It’s Okay to Cry”, in which she used her own voice and image for the first time in her work, naked from the bust against a background of clouds. This has been widely interpreted as her manifestation as a trans woman.

She affirmed her trans identity in later interviews, although she spoke of feeling trapped by labels and described her music as her “chosen method of communication” and self-expression. Following her accidental death in 2021, representatives informed Pitchfork that Sophie preferred not to use a family name.
