Diversity recruiter April Christina Curley says she’s another black woman fired by Google

(Newer)
– A few weeks ago, Google was in the middle of a controversy over Dr. Timnit Gebru, who says she was fired after sending an email criticizing the company. Now a second black woman who used to work for Google slams it, saying she has “the receipts” to prove she herself was unfairly fired. April Christina Curley called herself Google’s “MOST Successful Diversity Recruiter in History” Twitter Monday to tell her side of the story. She says the company “canceled” her in September after being solely responsible for recruiting students from HBCUs. Curley writes that, despite ‘great’ achievements on her part, ‘I was repeatedly denied promotions, my compensation was reduced, placed on performance improvement plans, leadership opportunities denied, yelled at, [and] deliberately excluded from meetings. ”

Curley also says that one of her managers (female and white) told her that her strong Baltimore accent was a ‘disability’ that she had to reveal during internal meetings and that ‘she never felt comfortable supporting my work because she was ‘intimidated’ and therefore never considered me for leadership opportunities. Curley says she has more about “the horribly racist recruiting and hiring practices I’ve seen at Google,” but will save those anecdotes for later. NBC News has more this year on other complaints about diversity at Google, where black women make up 0.7% of the tech workforce. “We’ve seen what happens to black women in Google who oppose the status quo,” an employee told NBC. “Most of the time they are forced to leave the company.” Google representative tells Business Insider that the company has a “large team of recruiters” to bring in HBCU students, her claims. ” has also responded to Curley’s story, calling it a “heartbreaking story.
