On Thursday, Blizzard revealed a host of new details around Diablo immortal – his mobile Diablo game – and even launched an alpha test in Australia. Diablo immortal is in many ways similar to Diablo 3, but in a preview event on Monday, Blizzard told us that its mobile game is more about a single character experience than the current Diablo game for console and PC. That means that an important feature will be missing Diablo immortal at launch: seasons.
Diablo 3Seasons have kept the game going for years. If you’re not familiar, Blizzard launches a new season every few months Diablo 3. Each new season asks players to start a new character and redesign them from scratch. Players then push that one character through for a few months with unique Seasonal Effects, trying to see how far they can get. Then Blizzard launches a new season and they do it all over again.
Rather than rebuilding a character every few months to leave it, Blizzard wants to take more of a one-character approach Immortal. So while players can have multiple different classes on their account, Blizzard expects most players to play primarily with just one game.
Diablo immortal seems influenced by World of Warcraft in this way. Instead of seasons, Immortal can lure players back with expansions and big patches to keep the game fresh. It is conceivable that over years players will have characters that they have spent almost all their time in.
This is a substantial shift in philosophy for Diablo, especially for hardcore players. I’ve spent time with over 30 characters in it Diablo 3 since Blizzard launched that game in 2012. But characters in Diablo 3 Release quickly and easily – Season models rely on players moving to a new one every few months, switching character classes depending on the seasonal event. Some players even create hardcore characters that disappear after their first death. Blizzard wants players to invest in their Diablo immortal characters for years to come, and Diablo 3The seasons are not compatible with those types of playstyles.
