Destructoid’s award for Best Switch Game of 2020 goes to …

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

2020 was a difficult year, requiring a lot of self-care and few opportunities to escape here and there. No game embodied that better than Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

It was a tough race between New horizons and Hades (we had to have a run-off!), but in the end, the cute little animals beat the rougher underworld. The main storyline of New horizons and I’ve dabbled in every seasonal event, I can see why.

There is a certain low key pull New horizons that cannot be denied. Early on, it’s the game you play for everyone else. Ultimately, it’s the game you can fit in between something else. When the discourse has wrapped up and moved on from a particular title (things go way too fast unfortunately), New horizons is still there. In fact your village actually is still there, waiting for your return and squashing a few bugs.

Also as Zelda: Breath of the Wild and several other great Nintendo games from the past few years, New horizons continues to make headlines thanks to the community’s tireless efforts. Humans make some pretty fantastic things in this universe; and even if you’re not actively playing it, it was probably fun to follow along.

For these and more reasons Animal Crossing: New Horizons is our Switch Game of the Year 2020.
