Bungie announced today that it is getting rid of Destiny 2The most beleaguered mechanic: sunset. Starting in Season 14, new weapons no longer have an expiration date.
“This is a big change for Destiny and one that we have not made lightly,” wrote assistant game director Joe Blackburn in a sweeping new state of mind. Destiny post at Bungie’s website“However, we believe there is nothing more important in it Destiny than getting our rewards right. “
Introduced in last fall’s Beyond Light expansion, Sunsetting gave every bit of loot in the game, except exotics, an infusion cap that kept players from increasing their power after a year after it was first added to the game. This effectively gave any item that players worked hard to grind for an expiration date. the gear could still be used in non-power-oriented activities like Crucible and patrols, but in raids and other end-game content, it would no longer be viable. The purpose of sunset was to aid in better balance and focus Destiny 2‘s loot pool, but players are understandably frustrated to see their favorite weapons outdated. Less than a year after the mechanic was first announced, Bungie is already reversing course.
“We made the decision that any weapon or armor that can currently be infused at maximum force will continue to achieve maximum strength permanently,” Blackburn wrote. Starting in Season 14, we will no longer limit the infusion of weapons or armor that have not yet reached the limit from the start of Season 13. This means you will have your Trustee, your Falling Guillotine, and all the high armor you earned this year to engage in the heist in The Witch Queen. “

The downside to this is that it sounds like Bungie will be stricter about restricting the use of certain weapons that are considered overpowered. Felwinter’s Lie, a legendary rifle earned as part of a tedious quest early last year, is everywhere in PVP modes. It was previously set to sunset after the current season. Now Bungie will have to find a different way to deal with it.
Blackburn also revealed some other changes coming to the game. The power progression in Destiny 2 has also been a boring grind lately, and indeed it is being overhauled as well. “To counter this, we will experiment with a new power limit,” Blackburn wrote. “From Season 14 onwards we will only increase the Power cap by 10 for each season without expansion. This means that if you hit max power in Season 13, you’ll be directly in the Power Chase’s 10-point Pinnacle tire the following season. “Hallelujah.
There is other good news:
- PVP is getting three major updates: a no-emote mode to address peeking, Stasis and other subclasses rebalancing, and new perks to shake up the meta. These changes are scheduled for Season 15.
- Bungie stops cheating by doubling the size of his security team.
- Trials of Osiris rewards and matchmaking will be reviewed to make them less of a bummer and make it easier for solo players to join.
- Destiny 1’s Vault of Glass attack returns in Season 14 and will be given Master and Grandmaster difficulty versions by the end of the year.
- Transmog is definitely coming in Season 14 (yes), but will be powered by bounties and have its own grind.
- Ikora Rey finally returns next season.
- Cross play will be implemented in Season 15.
While I’m disappointed that The Witch Queen’s expansion is shifting to next year, I feel optimistic about these massive improvements and new features that will be rolled out for the rest of the year. Destiny 2future. Then again this great State of Destiny-style posts often do. We will see how the changes actually disappear once they come into play.
