One of Robert Saleh’s former defensive stars makes a case for Deshaun Watson to make his way to the Jets.
‘If I were Deshaun, I would get out of there as soon as possible. I was going to New York. … The Jets, ”said Richard Sherman, corner shooter of 49ers, on“ The Cris Collinsworth Podcast, ”which Sherman co-hosts.
“It would be the most beautiful. Decent offensive line. They should find some threats, they should find some assault weapons, but I think a lot more people would be excited to be there. I think the free agency market will be oversaturated this year because of the salary cap, but that’s what I’d do. I would get out of there at the first smoke. “
Watson, 25, earned his third straight Pro Bowl nod in 2020 after throwing for an NFL best 4,823 yards, 33 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, along with a 444-yard rush and three rushing scores. He played in all but one game for the past three seasons, despite being fired 155 times during that period.
And yet, the Texans took a huge step back and went 4-12 this season. After a misguided off-season transaction that sent DeAndre Hopkins to the Cardinals, Bill O’Brien was fired from a 0-4 start as coach and general manager.
Watson’s frustration “was on a 2, then I took it to 10,” he tweeted last week, confirming almost word for word an ESPN report that his rage levels were between the Hopkins trade and now. He wanted input on the Texans’ search for a general manager and head coach.
But the team dragged their feet into setting up an interview with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, about whom Watson has heard good things from Patrick Mahomes. Then the team hired the Patriots’ Nick Caserio as general manager in place of the recommended finalists of Korn Ferry, Omar Khan of the Steelers and ESPN’s Louis Riddick, a move that had the fingerprints of much-maligned manager Jack Easterby all over it.
‘They say [Watson is] don’t answer phone calls or text messages – neither do I, ”Sherman said. ‘He’s done everything. He took a beating for you and played efficiently. “
Watson offered some hope to Jets fans by liking an Instagram post featuring The Post’s “Watever It Takes” back page, calling for the Jets to chase the quarterback.
Sherman has raved about Saleh since the Jets hired him, and seems to think a Saleh-Watson marriage would get the Jets in trouble again.
“Great Pickup!” Sherman previously told The MMQB of Saleh. “He’s going to turn that whole culture around!”
