Secretary of the Department of Labor and Human Resources, Carlos J. Rivera Santiago, announced today that unemployment insurance applicants can extend their benefits once they are exhausted in the same system in which the subsequent weeks are claimed.

“Our system has been renewed; Anyone who applies for unemployment insurance and has exhausted their benefits will be able to automatically complete their 13 additional weeks extension under the PEUC program and answer the questions that appear before submitting their application for the following weeks, ”explains Rivera Santiago.

“The plaintiff does not have to wait for our employees to extend their benefits; You just visit our website, and in the next section of the unemployment application, once you have entered your social security and PIN, answer the questions related to the PEUC, ”he explains in a press release.

The federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act establishes a temporary benefits program known as Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), which provides up to 13 additional weeks of benefits for individuals who have exhausted all of their rights under unemployment insurance. and staying fit and available for work, there are more actively looking for work.
