Some Democrats cooked privately.
They heard the comments of Maxine Waters, Chair of the House Financial Services Committee, D-Calif. Waters urged protesters to be “confrontational” if the verdict in Derek Chauvin’s trial did not go the way she wanted.
Waters’ remarks threatened to disrupt the very winded democratic coalition of moderates and progressives.
Some ordinary Democrats found Waters’s comments disgusting.

That disgust was further spread after Hennepin, MN County Judge Peter Cahill, criticized Waters from the bench on Monday, describing her comments as “disrespectful to the rule of law.”
“Congressman Waters may have given you something on appeal that could result in this entire process being quashed,” Cahill told Chauvin’s counsel.
The very fact that Cahill discussed Waters right before the jury got the case frustrated the Democrats.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., Had already demanded that Democratic leaders punish Waters. Fox is told some Democrats aren’t happy with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Who says Waters shouldn’t apologize.
So McCarthy asked that the House disapprove of Waters.
Censorship is one of three formal forms of discipline in the House, sandwiched between reprimand and expulsion.
“Censorship” is a serious, formal rebuke by the House. The full House must vote to disapprove a member. It requires a simple majority of votes. The censored member appears in the source of the House of Representatives. The Speaker then berates the offending member of the stage.
“It rises to that level because Maxine Waters believes violence has a value,” McCarthy said of Fox of censure.

One Democrat even said he would vote to disapprove of Waters if the resolution was “reasonably worded.”
McCarthy noted that if the House condemned the California Democrat, she would lose her committee chair.
“So maybe she would learn once and for all that violence has no value,” McCarthy said.
The House has only convicted 23 members in its history. The last was former Rep. Charlie Rangel, DN.Y., in 2010 for a variety of violations.
And that number remains at 23.
As soon as McCarthy made his proposal to punish Waters, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., Went to the table or put the proposal aside. The vote was a step away from an actual up or down vote to disapprove of Waters.
And then some of those same Democrats who wanted to admonish Waters privately, didn’t.
Their urge to sanction Waters crumbled faster than the European Super League.
The House protected Waters through a party line vote by filing McCarthy’s resolution, 216-210. Lawmakers were not on the record, for or against Waters disapproving. Members have just voted on whether Parliament should consider the resolution or destroy it altogether.
“I certainly will not support that frivolous resolution,” said House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries, DN.Y.

Republicans argued that Democrats only wanted to excuse their side for sparking the riot in the Capitol. GOPers said the Democrats didn’t want to go it alone.
“I would like to see Maxine Waters apologize for the inflammatory comments she has made to incite violence,” said Steve Scalise, R-La, of House Minority Whip. “It’s a powder keg down there. The last thing you want is to make it worse, and most importantly, file an appeal. ‘
“One of the hallmarks of our system is that people have the right to a fair trial. Sometimes a fair trial is difficult to conduct,” said Mitch McConnell, Senate minority leader R-Ky. “It is certainly not helpful if a member of Congress, and even the President of the United States, appears to be weighing in public as the jury tries to get to the bottom of this important case.”
Democrats may be mad at Waters for stirring the pot. But they believe that the Republicans used Waters’s language for political gain. Plus, Democrats found the Empire that GOPers wanted to call Waters, but not those on their side of the aisle.
“Kevin McCarthy should focus on his own conference because Republicans are in a mess right now,” Jeffries blurted out. ‘You have a situation where Lauren Boebert is a mess. Matt Gaetz is a mess. Marjorie Taylor Greene is a mess. Clean up your mess, Kevin. Sit down.’

Hoyer defended Waters.
“However, it is irresponsible to take Chairman Waters’ comments out of context to just have a ‘gotcha’, partisan vote,” Hoyer told Republicans on the floor. “If ‘confrontation’ is subject to sanctions, then we will have many people by your side who we think are confrontational every day.”
Hoyer accused the Republicans of “exploiting” the pain of those directly affected by George Floyd’s death for a “partisan bat.”
Still, some Democrats confided to Fox that they were uncomfortable with Waters’s language.
Waters has pushed aggression before. In 2018, she encouraged protesters to publicly challenge Trump administration officials about border policies.
“If you see someone from that cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, or at a gas station, get out and create a crowd,” Waters pleaded. And you push them back. And you tell them that they are no longer welcome anywhere. ‘
