The riots took place when the US Congress gathered to confirm Joe Biden’s victory in the US presidential election in November.
A number of celebrities urged politicians to invoke the 25th Amendment – which arranges for the Vice President to take control if the Commander-in-Chief “ is unable to fulfill the powers and duties of his office ” – and to end his term of office two weeks earlier.
The protests came along with the Republican congressional dispute over the election results ahead of Biden’s scheduled inauguration on January 20.
