On Friday, the House Ethics Committee also opened an investigation into the congressman, citing allegations of “sexual misconduct and / or illegal drug use” and claiming that he shared nude photos of young women with his House colleagues.

The New York Times reported that Gaetz was under investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) following an alleged relationship with a 17-year-old girl and a possible violation of sex trafficking laws. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing.

Gaetz has claimed that he and his family were the target of an extortion plan by a former DOJ official, although that official has denied the allegation.

The GOP legislator has obtained legal representation during the DOJ investigation and has indicated that it has no intention of resigning.

Trump appeared to defend Gaetz in a statement earlier this week, insisting that the Florida Republican “has completely denied the charges against him.”
