Defense of Geovanny Fuentes requests rejection of a witness from the prosecutor’s office

TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS.- Three days after the start of the trial, the legal defense of the Honduran drug trafficker Geovanny Fuentes Ramirez opposes the evacuation of a protected witness at the suggestion of the United States Attorney.

On March 1, the prosecution reported that it had met with a previously undisclosed civil witness who had recently traveled to the United States from Honduras, and whom they are now proposing to testify under a pseudonym at trial.

“The defense is totally against this witness being allowed to testify at the trial, which is scheduled for March 8. The late revelation of this witness makes it impossible for the defense to investigate the merits of his testimony, ”the lawyer stated in his motion. Avraham C. Moskowitz, defender of Fuentes Ramírez.

The lawyer claimed that due to the difficulties caused by the pandemic, he still does not know if he will have the opportunity to speak to Fuentes Ramírez about the new witness and his possible testimony.

“If the court is inclined to allow the witness to testify, the trial should at least be postponed so that the defense can try to investigate the witness and his proposed testimony,” Moskowitz said.

For its part, the public prosecutor’s office has requested that the defense’s request to postpone the trial be rejected. And with regard to the intention to dismiss the witness, the prosecutors argued that “the defense attorney has sufficient time to prepare for Witness # 2’s testimony.”

On the other hand, they argued that the government also plans to call Witness 2 towards the end of the trial, primarily so that the defense attorney has extra time to prepare for his testimony and to talk to the accused.

The United States attorney it did not reveal the identity of the witness and only established that the suspect and the lawyer themselves knew him.
