Deaths from coronavirus in Iowa drive the state to a new monthly high

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa reported seven additional coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday, bringing the state total to 3,999.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University report that the per capita death rate in Iowa has risen a notch to the 14th highest in the country with 126.5 deaths per 100,000 people.

Recently updated state data shows 3,952 people died in Iowa in November, the highest one-month death rate for the state.

Available state data shows that last year’s Iowa death rate was the highest total in one year since 1915. Deaths through November totaled 31,628. Even without adding deaths in December, the state has already surpassed the number of deaths in 2019, totaling 30,669.
