Just over a week after one Dead in daylight designer was publicly agitated over requests for accessibility options, developer Behavior Interactive announced it is working on accommodations for color blind players.
“This is not how we wanted to reveal this, but we feel it is the right time,” the studio’s official Twitter account told video game advocate and advisor Steven Spohn. earlier today. “We have been working on a color blind mode for a while and are planning a release soon.”
Spohn had previously asked the developer to answer statements by live balance designer Ethan “Almo” Larson on his personal Twitch stream, mocking a viewer for “chatting about color blind mode all the time.”
“It’s getting really boring,” Larson said on Jan. 12. “We’ve heard it a million times. We know. Continuing to bother us won’t change anything. When it is done, it is done when we have time to do it or when someone decides it is something that needs to be done. We know that many players want it. We know it is not a small number. We understand it.”
Dead in daylight have fans long asked for a color blind modeas the condition can seriously affect a person’s ability to play the game. According to an recent Reddit post calling on the community to boycott online games on September 6, which advocacy groups have designated Color Blindness Awareness Day, are some of the more egregious examples in the game miniscule differences between status effect colors against the health bar and recent UI changes that in its place came a more obvious visual indicator of character injuries with a simple red glow.
G / O Media can receive a commission
While it couldn’t provide a release date, Behavior Interactive is hoping to add a color blind mode to Dead in daylight in the next major update to the game. The studio also shared samples of the work it has done so far.
“This is not indicative of the team’s opinion, and we apologize for any frustration or damage this may have caused,” said the official Twitter account added in response to Larson’s statements.
