Dbrand starts selling matte black PS5 plates and dares to sue Sony

It’s fair to say that the PlayStation 5’s massive, two-tone industrial design isn’t for everyone, and now Dbrand says it has a solution. Best known for its personalized phone skins and cases, the company has put “Darkplates” up for sale, promising that the precisely cut pieces of plastic will turn your PS5 into a murdered, matte black hunk of hardware.

This isn’t just an unofficial accessory – Dbrand is actively encouraging Sony to pursue it for the release of the product. The background there is that a small company, first called PlateStation5 and then CustomizeMyPlates, was forced to cancel and refund orders for a similar product last year following legal action from Sony. Now Dbrand’s order page says “Go ahead, sue us” at the top.

The stimulus doesn’t stop there. Dbrand’s Darkplate has a texture somewhat inspired by the micro-texture of the PlayStation button icons on the PS5 and the controller. The company describes it as “a well-known, but legally distinct apocalyptic twist on the classic PlayStation button shapes.”

The Darkplate also has an optional skin for the PS5’s glossy black center section, in case you want to tweak the color or just make it less of a fingerprint breeding ground. In addition to the matte black option, there are solid yellow and white skins and patterns such as ‘robot camouflage’ and ‘redcode’.

Converting your PS5 to matte black won’t be particularly cheap and may not be that fast. A set of records retails for $ 49 plus shipping, while adding a middle skin adds the base price to $ 60.95. All three product waves shipping in February, March, and April respectively have sold out in the past few hours, while a fourth batch for May is now available for backorder. The PS5 Digital Edition version of the records has not yet been offered for sale at all.
