Danilo is not yet listed as the PLD’s presidential candidate

Following a nearly seven-hour meeting, the Political Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) yesterday reported the possible candidates for the presidency of the Republic of that political organization for the 2024 elections.

According to PLD Secretary General Charles Mariotti, there are seven people who have presented their intentions to date, adding that the matter was treated superficially during the meeting.

However, the former Monte Plata senator clarified that these are “presidential candidates”, that the purple party statutes stipulate that the candidates must be approved by the Central Committee.

Still, he revealed that those who have taken the first step so far have been the former Minister of Public Works and the PLD’s last presidential candidate Gonzalo Castillo; the former Vice President Margarita Cedeño, and the Mayor of Santiago Abel Martínez.

Similarly, Mariotti named former Environment Minister Francisco Domínguez Brito, former Labor Minister Maritza Hernández and former Education Ministers Andrés Navarro and Carlos Amarante Baret.

But the list is not final, as the Political Committee assured that the PLD’s “renewal process” is still very young, so names can still be added to the group of applicants.

“Not all of them are and there are all of them,” said Mariotti.

The committee referred to the potential candidacy in an earlier meeting, when the PLD secretary assured that those seeking the presidential candidacy would meet with him and the party’s chairman, Danilo Medina.

“The interested parties must meet with the party chairman and general secretary, so the guidelines are drawn up, this with the aim that it does not contradict the transformation and reorganization process to choose the new middle authorities and the bases of the party. “explains Mariotti, in mid-March.
