Dallas police officer beaten and killed by suspected drunk driver

A Dallas police officer was struck by an allegedly drunk driver and was killed Saturday morning when he blocked the scene of a previous highway accident, Dallas police said.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce this at about 0125 this morning [1:25 a.m.] a @DallasPD “An officer working at an accident site was hit and killed by a DWI driver,” chief Eddie Garcia tweeted. “Our department is grieving again, but we are encouraged by the strength of his family. Godspeed my brother.”

The officer was standing outside his marked patrol vehicle with his emergency lights on in the northern lanes of North Central Expressway on Walnut Hill Lane at around 1:45 a.m. when a four-door Kia Forte driving at high speed turned toward him, the department said.

The officer was taken to Baylor Hospital, where he subsequently died of his injuries.

The driver, described as a 32-year-old black man, has suffered no injuries and is awaiting charges by police.

Meanwhile, officials question a female passenger in his vehicle. She was also uninjured in the collision.
