Daimler and Portland General Electric (PGE) today unveiled a new ‘first of its kind’ electric truck charging station in Portland, Oregon.
Semi-electric trucks are now hitting the road in greater numbers and the industry is trying to figure out the charging infrastructure to support them.
Today Daimler and Portland General Electric (PGE) announced an important step in that direction.
They unveiled their first full electric truck charging station for Daimler Truck’s headquarters in Portland, Oregon:
Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) and Portland General Electric (PGE) today opened to the public the first of its kind for charging heavy-duty electric trucks, dubbed ‘Electric Island’. Electric Island will help accelerate the development, testing and deployment of zero-emission commercial vehicles (tank to wheel), such as those of DTNA.
Here’s a short video of the charging station:
As you can see, the site is designed in such a way that trucks and buses can easily enter and exit the charging stations.
They will use the station to study the loading of heavy trucks:
- Utilizing automotive chargers with power delivery up to more than one megawatt (more than 4 times faster than today’s fastest light vehicle chargers), enabling PGE and DTNA to develop best practices for cost-effective future deployments;
- Integration of heavy-duty charging technology into PGE’s Smart Grid, such as vehicle-to-grid technologies, second-life use of Daimler’s battery packs and on-site power generation; and
- Testing information technology capabilities such as fleet and energy management through captive solutions and services.
While they plan to study 1 MW charging, it’s unclear whether that capacity is already deployed at the site.
Daimler has several electric truck programs already supplied to customers, including the eActros and the Freightliner eCascadia.
