The US reported 4.6 million vaccine doses administered on Saturday, a one-day record, and another 3.6 million injections on Sunday. This brings the daily average of the doses administered over the past week to 3.1 million.
At the same time, the country is reporting 70,000 new coronavirus infections per day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, a level that is in line with last summer’s rise, when the average number of cases peaked at 67,000 in late July.
No state records more daily infections per capita than Michigan, according to a CNBC analysis of Hopkins data, with daily numbers of cases and hospitalizations approaching the state’s previous peaks and Covid-19 deaths increasing there.
American Covid cases
The U.S. has reported an average of 70,000 new Covid-19 cases daily in the past week, Hopkins data shows. Although well below the country’s winter peak of about 250,000 new cases per day, that figure is consistent with the number of cases reported during the country’s “second wave” during the summer, which were record highs at the time.
Michigan sees an average of nearly 7,400 new cases per day, which is nearing the state’s record high of more than 8,300 per day in December. On Friday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer asked high schools to temporarily suspend personal learning and asked residents to limit activities. The governor also called for schools to voluntarily suspend sports matches and for residents not to dine in one person for two weeks to slow the spread.
The death toll in Michigan is also on the rise. The state reports an average of 43 Covid deaths per day in the past week, up from 30 a week earlier.
According to Hopkins data, the average daily number of cases is up 5% or more from a week ago in 29 states.
American Covid deaths
According to Hopkins data, the US reported an average of 981 daily deaths from Covid-19 in the past week.
The latest trend in the US in coronavirus deaths is being obscured by a massive release of data on about 1,800 deaths from Oklahoma. These deaths are all currently being reported for April 7, 2021, despite occurring weeks or months prior. The Oklahoma State Department of Health has announced that the state is in the process of transitioning data reporting guidelines in line with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requirements, which is the cause of this increase.
Prior to this anomaly, the US daily Covid death toll had been on a downward path from January’s record levels.
US vaccination shots administered
The country reported a one-day record of 4.6 million vaccine doses administered on Saturday, according to data from the CDC, and the US has given an average of 3.1 million injections per day for the past week.
US share of the population is vaccinated
More than a third of the U.S. population has received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine and more than a fifth is fully vaccinated, data from the CDC has shown.
Of those over 65, 78% have received at least one dose and 61% have been fully vaccinated.
